I've been craving spice and protein, so I've sought out BBQ lately. Makes tasty BBQ in Ballard at 65th NW and 20th Ave NW. The ribs and pulled pork were of great quality and cooked to perfection. You add your own sauce. I recommend their spicy sauce, which isn't all that hot, but quite good after it sinks in for a bit. I strongly suggest having them heat up your sauce — it's offered chilled on the tables. Since the goods are served without sauce, kids go for them, so it's a good family deal. For the truly best, go down to Pecos Pit for lunch and have the Pecos beef sandwich, sloppy and medium is how I like it best–they can't be beat.

Dogs on the beach?

After seeing a dog harass a seal pup at Golden Gardens a few years back, and then seeing retrievers biting into salmon at Carkeek, as the salmon were returning to spawn after a life at sea, I think dogs can't be allowed offleash at our beaches. Too many dog owners just aren't able to care for their dogs in ways that can coexist with our wildlife. What's the best way to approach dog owners to let them know the law — Dogs are not allowed on beaches, playgrounds or ballfields in Seattle [SMC 18.12.080]. without being a fuddy duddy? A man walking with his well-behaved dog on the beach the other day was oblivious to the eagle on the beach that his dog chased away. Away is not such a great place to have to go.

Bird Life

The spring mornings are full of songbirds and robins and all. Wake up early, before 6am, and walk where trees are plenty. Down at Golden Gardens when the tide is low, walk to Carkeek park on the beach. Watch a blue heron make a morning commute north up along the ridgeline. Barnacles are bare. Later in the day, an immature bald eagle walks the shoreline, after being pestered by aerobatic crows. Another immature eagle soars above, and 2 adults, probably their parents, fly higher above in the light breeze.
